How can manual therapy help?
Hands-on manual therapy is intended to produce any or all of the following effects:
- improve tissue extensibility
- increase range of motion of the joint complex
- mobilize or manipulate soft tissues and joints
- induce relaxation
- change muscle function
- modulate pain
- and reduce soft tissue swelling
- inflammation or movement restriction
Advanced manual treatment can affect muscles, joints, ligaments, and nerves.
Techniques
Manual therapy techniques can include:
- soft tissue and joint mobilization
- joint manipulation
- instrument-assisted soft tissue techniques (IASTM)
- traction
- massage
- trigger point therapy
- active release techniques (ART)
Active range of motion and passive range of motion, stretching, and nerve mobilization.
